Lace up the joggers, grab the deep heat and get ready to tackle 51 kilometres through Kangaroo Valley.
The 2017 Trek for Timor is organised by the Kangaroo Valley East Timor Friendship Group and will raise funds to install solar lights in houses in the Remexio district of East Timor.
The event has been running for three years and the Kangaroo Valley-Remexio Partnership, together with volunteers from the Alternative Technology Association, raised enough money to install clean, green solar lighting in 1506 houses.
“Education is a key to changing lives in Timor Leste, and this year’s trek is aimed at enabling young people from remote parts of Remexio to get an education and to make a contribution to their communities and local and regional economies.
- Diana Jaffray
More than 30 local people have also been trained in the installation and maintenance of the systems.
This year’s trek will be held on Saturday, October 7.
Participants can walk or run 51 kilometre in 18 hours or enjoy a more leisurely day and choose the 11 kilometre option.
Having completed the Remexio Solar Lighting Project, the Kangaroo Valley East Timor Friendship Group now intend to expand their education program.
Plans are in place for a second student house in Dili and more scholarships for young people to stay at school and go on to further tertiary studies.
“Education is a key to changing lives in Timor Leste, and this year’s trek is aimed at enabling young people from remote parts of Remexio to get an education and to make a contribution to their communities and local and regional economies,” group member Diana Jaffray said.
“If you want to get involved in helping us achieve this next project and spend a wonderful day in our Valley, join the trek.”
Get a team together of two to six people, decide to walk or run 50 kilometres, or the alternative route of 11 kilometres, within 24 hours and get people to sponsor your efforts.
