BLS: Northeast CPI grows slower than national rate

PROVIDENCE – The consumer price index in the Northeast area increased 1.6 percent year over year in November, slower than the national CPI increase, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Wednesday.

The BLS-defined Northeast region includes the states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.

The average United States city CPI rose 2.2 percent year over year in November.

The Northeast region CPI for fuels and utilities increased 5.5 percent year over year in November, which included a 12.1 percent increase in the price of utility gas service.

The U.S. city average rise in fuel and utilities CPI was 3.3 percent year over year, while piped gas utilities rose 3.6 percent in November, significantly less than the Northeast.

Both gasoline and motor fuel each increased 14.9 percent year over year in the Northeast, less than the national U.S. city average of 16.5 percent for each.

Medical care CPI in the Northeast increased 2.1 percent year over year as opposed to the U.S. average of 1.7 percent in November.

The energy CPI rose 9.8 percent in the Northeast area, matched by a 9.4 percent rise in the U.S.

The housing CPI in the Northeast rose at a slower rate than the U.S. average. The U.S. housing CPI rose at 2.8 percent in November, while in the Northeast region housing only rose 1.8 percent.
