A demonstration outside the Met Gala event demanding a ceasefire in Gaza met with a violent clash on Monday. The angry group of protesters near the Metropolitan Museum of Art got engaged in a tussle with the New York Police Department (NYPD) officials on Monday. Several videos of demonstrations including some people breaking barriers, and firing flare guns were widely shared on social media.
The violent clash led to NYPD declaring a level 3 mobilization in the area. Some protesters with an aim to disturb the gathering also were rushing to the Gala. They wanted to forcefully enter through barricades to access restricted areas outside the Met Gala event. Initial reports suggested that multiple arrests were made by law enforcement.
The NYPD stepping up its action in the wake of a large-scale protest in Manhattan earlier today. The Police Department deployed a Level Three mobilization for better handling of the Pro-Palestine protesters, who are reportedly engaging in fights with the police.
The cops did not share an official statement on the matter. However, videos from multiple locations in Manhattan went viral online. In the footage, the police personnel were seen struggling in order to control the angry protesters, who were attacking them.
The NYPD typically employs a system of mobilizations or responses to incidents, ranging from Level 1 to Level 4, each indicating the severity and scale of the situation. As of January 2022, whenever a serious incident or situation unfolds and it requires a significant amount of police response in terms of presence and force's strength - a level 3 mobilization is typically called.
