Santa Cruz’s Nat Young was eliminated in Round 5 of the World Surf League’s Quiksilver Pro France on Saturday in Landes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France.
With his finish, Young climbed from No. 33 to No. 29 on the Championship Tour leaderboard with two events remaining. The contest window for the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal in Peniche, Portugal, opens Friday and runs through Oct. 31.
Young was ousted by No. 9 Joel Parkinson of Australia 14.03 to 10.24 in Heat 4 of Round 5.
Parkinson advanced to the quarterfinals, where he was skunked by eventual champion Gabriel Medina of Brazil, 15.20 to 1.20.
Medina topped Hawaii’s John John Florence, ranked No. 1 on the CT, 16.40 to 16.00 in the semifinals and No. 11 Sebastian Zietz of Hawaii in the final, 16.00 to 9.30. Medina rose from No. 8 to No. 3 by winning the event.
Girls cross country
Zlatunich leads Mariners to title >> Aptos senior Marea Zlatunich won the 3-mile Monterey Bay Invitational at Toro Park in Salinas in 18:19, helping the Mariners win the 25-team event with 82 points.
Palo Alto (118) took second and Willow Glen (132) was third. Scotts Valley (502) was 21st.
Santa Cruz junior Lila Roake (19:13) took fifth out of 202 runners.
Aptos’ senior Sofia Natividad (19:52) was 16th, freshman Susana Estrada (20:25) was 20th and sophomore Kailea Zlatunich (20:35) was 23rd.
Boys cross country
Kelly leads locals at Toro >> St. Francis junior EJ Kelly V took 12th in 16:42 at the 3-mile Monterey Bay Invitational at Toro Park in Salinas.
Aptos senior Jorge Benitez (16:53) took 19th in the field of 244 to help the Mariners finish in fifth with 213 points.
Willow Glen (71) won, Palo Alto (92) was second and Los Altos (102) was third in the 32-team event. Scotts Valley (358) took ninth and Monte Vista Christian (634) was 25th.
Men’s cross country
Colosi leads UC Santa Cruz to win >> UCSC’s Paul Colosi took sixth place and teammate Nick Klieber was seventh in the 8k Open race at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational at Baylands Regional Park in Sunnyvale.
They helped the Slugs post a score of 44 to finish No. 1 among non-NCAA Division I teams.
Colosi, a sophomore, finished in 25:16.1 and Klieber, a freshman, followed at 25:17.1. Sophomore Draven Hawk (25:39.7) and junior Dante Capone (25:44.4) also posted top-20 finishes for the Slugs.
Women’s cross country
Slugs run to third >> UCSC took third place in the 6k Open race at the Bronco Invitational at Baylands Regional Park.
The Slugs finished with a score of 90. Fresno Pacific (44) won the non-NCAA D-I race.
Sophomore Sydney Gutierrez (23:36.4) took 20th and freshman Carrie Bradley took 24th in 23:45.7 to lead the Slugs.
Women’s volleyball
At Claremont-MUDD-SCRIPPS 3, UCSC 0 >> Tatum Novitzky had eight kills as the Slugs lost 25-14, 25-7, 25-23 in Claremont.
UCSC’s Krysti Photias had 16 assists and teammate Rachel Sveiven had seven assists and 12 digs.
The Slugs (3-19) play at University of Antelope Valley on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Beach volleyball
NO ATTITUDES ALLOWED >> San Francisco’s Bradley Tiller and Jonah May won the men’s title at the No Attitude Allowed tournament at Main Beach.
Two San Jose teams emerged victorious. Brenda Moser and Michael Fieber won the co-ed title and Julie Bishop and Allison Hibbard won the novice crown.
Disc golf
Hokom tied for fifth >> Freedom’s Sarah Hokom is tied for fifth at 2-over 133 heading into the final day of competition at the Ed Headrick Disc Golf Hall of Fame Classic in Appling, Georgia.
Catrina Allen of Mesa, Arizona, leads the Open women’s division at 11-under 120.
