Denmark Super Series: Srikanth enters semis after Saina, Prannoy go down

Denmark Super Series: Kidambi Srikanth won the quarterfinals match against Viktor Axelsen after Saina Nehwal, HS Prannoy go down on Friday.

Indian shuttlers Saina Nehwal, HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth were in action on Friday in the quarterfinal stage of Denmark Open Super Series Premier, fighting for a place for the last four spot. But it was only Srikanth who was successful in his campaign after Saina, Prannoy went down in straight games. Srikanth beat Axelsen 14-21, 22-20, 21-7 to enter the semifinals and keeping Indian hopes alive. He had on Thursday overcome a spirited challenge from Jeon Hyeok Jin to set up the quarterfinals clash while Saina had knocked out Olympic champion Carolina Marin 22-20 21-18. Prannoy had ousted Denmark’s Emil Holst 21-18, 21-19 in a hard-fought match. Here are the key highlights of the Denmark Super Series quarterfinals stage:

0004 hrs IST: Srikanth wins quarterfinals match against Viktor Axelsen

What a game by Srikanth! Srikanth keeps Indian hopes alive as he beat Axelsen 14-21, 22-20, 21-7 to enter the semifinals. It was like he had made up his mind that he must win it. He took initial lead and only kept increasing it to take a solid advantage in the third round. He now remains the only Indian in the competition.

2357 hrs IST: What did Srikanth eat before the start of the third game. He has taken the third game by a storm, leading by 16-4. What a comeback, what a performance Srikanth. He knows when to strike.

2350 hrs IST: Srikanth wins second game

What an entertaining neck-to-neck performances by both the gentlemen. Srikanth manages to win the second game. He remains India’s only hope in the competition after Saina and Prannoy went down in their quarterfinal matches today. Srikanth wins the second game 22-20

2332 hrs IST: Srikanth going strong in the second game. However, Axelsen is right behind. Srikanth leading 11-10. A better performance than his compatriots Saina and Prannoy.

2322 hrs IST: Srikanth loses opening game

Looks like a bad day for India. All three lost the opening games. Will Srikanth follow Saina and Prannoy to go down in the second game as well? He is our only hope left.

2315 hrs IST: Srikanth is trying to bridge the gap between himsefl and Axelsen, who is leading the opening game 15-12.

2307 hrs IST: Prannoy loses in the quarterfinals

Prannoy did take the lead in the second game, with a new-found confidence. But could not hold his fort against Son Wan Ho, who defeated him 21-13, 21-18.

2255 hrs IST: Meanwhile, Srikanth takes the other court against  Jeon Hyeok Jin, again in the men’s singles quarterfinals. Prannoy leading the second game 6-4.

2252 hrs IST: Prannoy loses opening game 21-13 to Son Wan Ho. Prannoy succumbed to pressure in the first game, something Son took advantage of.

2242 hrs IST: Prannoy is in action against World No 2 Son Wan Ho in the quarterfinals of men’s singles. Even though both the shuttlers started on a strong note, Son’s defence is too good for Prannoy, who is trailing in the game.

2210 hrs IST: SAINA LOSES IN THE QUARTERFINALS

That’s the end of it. It was a quick massacre of Saina by Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi who never gave away the lead to let the Hyderabad shuttler take advantage in the match. Yamaguchi dominated in both the games as Saina failed to find the answers to her attack. Saina went down 21-10, 21-13 in the quarterfinals.

2157 hrs IST: Saina trails in the second game by a point. She still didn’t hold the lead at any point in the game. Saina looking for a miracle here.

2150 hrs IST: SAINA LOSES OPENING GAME 21-10

That was a very weak performance from Saina from the very start of the match. Yamaguchi took an early lead in the opening game and kept working on the gap which the Indian failed to reduce. Let’s see what happens in the second game.

2130 hrs IST: Saina Nehwal takes the court against Akane Yamaguchi of Japan. Not a very strong start from the Hyderabad shuttler as she trails the first game 3-6.

2115 hrs IST: Lee Hyun got the better of  Rajiv Ouseph 24-22, 21-6

2050 hrs IST: Chen Yufei defeats Sayaka Sato of Japan 21-16, 21-14 to advance to the semi-finals stage of the women’s singles event.

2030 hrs IST: Saina Nehwal will be the first Indian to take the court today. Currently, Tai Tzu Ying won the match against Kim Hyo Min beating her 20-22, 21-16, 21-9.
