Mill Valley’s Jorge Maravilla, 40, who won the San Francisco Marathon in July, placed first in the inaugural Penghu Cross-Sea Marathon in Taipei, Taiwan, on Sunday.
The longtime runner finished the 26.2-mile course in 2 hours, 43 minutes, 7 seconds — 24 seconds ahead of second-place Teruto Taya of Japan. The three sections of the marathon — full, semi, 5K — featured 1,523 participants, including about 200 from abroad. The full, which Maravilla won, featured 355 runners.
Aquatic honors
Former Drake High standout Spencer Galli was named MVP of the Western Water Polo Association tournament after helping UC Davis earn its second consecutive conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Galli, a senior, scored twice in the Aggies’ 9-6 victory over No. 12 UC San Diego in Sunday’s conference title game. Galli and UC Davis (22-6) begin play in the national championships on Dec. 2 in Los Angeles.
Penguins get first win
Jeremiah Gray scored 14 of his game-high 19 points in the second half, leading the Dominican University men’s basketball team to a 72-71 victory over Sonoma State Saturday night in Rohnert Park.
Senior Reverend Maduakor and junior Cedric Thomas scored 11 points apiece for the Penguins (1-4), who travel to face Chico State on Wednesday night.
