Patriots linebacker Harris, 34, retires

After 11 seasons, David Harris announced his retirement from the NFL on Friday.

The 34-year-old linebacker spent last season with the Patriots where he played in 10 games. Harris finished the 2017 season with 22 tackles, 1.5 sacks and a pass deflection. His greatest impact with the Patriots likely came behind the scenes where the veteran helped several young linebackers in Foxboro. He was inactive for all three playoff games, including Super Bowl LII.

“After 11 years of having played the greatest team sport at its highest level, it’s now time for me to announce my retirement from the NFL,” Harris said in a statement via his agency, Sportstars.

The Patriots knew Harris well, as his first 10 NFL seasons came as a member of the New York Jets. A second-team All-Pro in 2009, Harris totaled over 100 tackles in six of his NFL seasons. Last offseason, Harris signed a two-year, $5-million deal with the Patriots. He played 181 defensive snaps last season. His best effort came in the Patriots Week 13 win over Buffalo where Harris finished with four tackles and 1.5 sacks.

Throughout the season, several players spoke out about the impact Harris had behind the scenes. Friday, linebacker Kyle Van Noy tweeted, "[Shout out] to my last OG David Harris! Congrats! It was only a year but the impact he had on me will be forever. True professional and the best part about him is he's truly selfless! Always looking to help and never complained. True leaders! Green team better give him a great coat!!!"

Harris was signed through the 2018 season, but with his retirement, the Patriots will save $2.125 million off their salary cap. Harris will count for $625,000 of the Patriots' 2018 cap due to his signing bonus.

Linebacker figures to be a big need for the Patriots this offseason. Free agency begins March 14.

Woods in the running at Honda Classic

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — Tiger Woods is four shots behind going into the weekend at a windy Honda Classic, where just about everyone has a chance.

Luke List shot a 4-under 66 in the morning and Jamie Lovemark had a 69 in the afternoon. That was enough for the two players who have never won on the PGA Tour to share the lead at 3-under 137. It's the highest score to lead the Honda Classic through 36 holes since it moved to PGA National in 2007. Woods was two shots off the lead until putting his tee shot into the water on the par-3 15th for a double bogey. He had a 71 and was at 1-over 141 and just outside the top 10.
