Sports Roundup: Providence volleyball’s title hopes tumble

Pacifica Christian 3, Providence 1: Aspirations of sharing a Liberty League title were dashed on Saturday evening on the road as the Pioneers lost, 19-25, 31-29, 25-23, 26-24.

A day after dealing Archer its only league loss, Providence (13-5, 5-2 in league) put itself in position to share the league title had it won Saturday and on Monday against Glendale Adventist Academy, but it fell in Saturday’s nailbiter.

Talia Patterson posted 22 kills and 16 digs for the Pioneers, who got 38 assists, 12 digs and five kills from Justine Nunez, five kills and 18 assists from Giselle Camonayan and 18 digs from Isabella Mahan.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Burroughs, Burbank at Riverside Invitational: Forgoing the usual trip to the Mt. SAC Invitational, the Indians took part in the Riverside Invitational on Saturday and produced some good results as Jagdeep Chahal and Alexander Hirsch took second and third, respectively, to lead Burroughs to a third-place finish in the boys’ three-mile Division I race.

The Indians finished with 149 points, trailing winner Dana Hills (37 points) and California (137).

Chahal ran to a time of 14 minutes 49.9 seconds, trailing only Dana Hills’ Jack Landgraf (14:47.5). Hirsch took third in 14:50.8. Raymond Berrellez took 23rd in 15:30.1 and Jeron Straker was 50th in 15:54.8.

Burbank finished 22nd in the race with 629 points and was led by Jahir Olvera (101st, 16:25.1).

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Burroughs, Burbank at Riverside Invitational: Two-time reigning All-Area Girls’ Cross-Country Runner of the Year Emily Virtue finished second at Saturday’s Riverside Invitational.

In a time of 17 minutes 5.3 seconds, Virtue trailed only Chino Hills’ Jacqueline Duarte (17:03.1) in the girls’ three-mile Division I race.

Jordan Guzman was the 43rd runner across and the next up for Burroughs in 19:03.5.

Burroughs finished ninth with 216 points, while Burbank was 11th with 264.

Noemi Apreza led Burbank with a 20th-place finish in 18:39.6. The Bulldogs’ next finisher was Shalom Mejia (48th, 19:10.9).
