U Sports Roundup: Montreal Carabins crush McGill Redbirds 31-7 on three TDs by Morand

MONTREAL — Carabins quarterback Dimitri Morand had three touchdowns in the first quarter and Montreal easily defeated the McGill Redbirds 31-7 on Saturday in USports football action.

Morand staked the Carabins (3-1) to an early 25-0 lead.

His three-yard touchdown run capped a 75-yard drive four minutes into the game. He found Carl Chabot in the end zone a few minutes later and connected with Hassane Dosso for the TD on the final throw of the first.

The Montreal QB finished 19-of-26 passing for 148 yards. Bertrand Beaulieu rushed for 102 yards on five carries, including a 70-yard dash in the fourth quarter that led to a field goal.  

Down 25-0, the only points scored by the Redbirds (1-3) came off an interception in the third quarter. The subsequent 39-yard drive ended with a one-yard run by Ben Bergeron-Spenard for the major.

Winners of two straight, the Carabins lead the RSEQ division while McGill is last.

LENNOXVILLE, Que. – The Mounties (2-0) left it late, scoring the game's only touchdown when Justin Vogels found Adam Shambemiradam with 1:30 left on the clock to down the Gaiters (0-1).

KINGSTON, Ont. – Quarterback James Keenan threw one touchdown pass and added another TD on the ground, and the Gaels (2-0) defence took advantage of two interceptions by Gee-Gees (0-2) QB Ben Maracle.

WINNIPEG – The Bisons (1-0) rallied from a nine-point deficit at halftime and scored 13 unanswered points against the Rams (0-1), including Brock Gowanlock's game-winning fumble return for a touchdown.

EDMONTON – Brad Launhardt threw three touchdowns and Matthew Peterson ran one in for the Golden Bears (1-0) over the Thunderbirds (0-1), which lost despite putting up 458 yards on offence.

TORONTO – Three touchdowns from quarterback Tanner DeJong gave the Ravens (1-1) a victory over the winless Lions (0-2), which scored all their points in the fourth quarter.

CALGARY – In a rematch of the last two Hardy Cups, the Dinos (1-0) put together a stunning 614 yards on offence, including 451 yards and three touchdowns from quarterback Josiah Joseph, to thump the Huskies (0-1).

GUELPH, Ont. – Three field goals by Eric Stranz and a fourth-quarter touchdown pass from Jackson White to Savaughn Magnaye-Jones gave the Gryphons (1-0) the win over the Mustangs (1-1).
