Bosnia and Herzegovina has taken a significant step towards energy security with the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation for the "Western Interconnection between BiH and the Republic of Croatia", a project set to bring natural gas to the Una-Sana Canton. The agreement was signed in Tuzla by Nijaz Husic, Prime Minister of the Una-Sana Canton, and Vedran Lakic, FBiH Minister of Energy, Mining, and Industry, representing the Federation’s government.

The signing occurred at the Energy Shift – The Path Toward Climate Neutrality, Decarbonisation, and Just Transition conference, which gathered key figures from the energy, industrial, and political sectors to discuss sustainable solutions for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s energy future.

A crucial element of the event was the formalisation of cooperation between the FBiH Government, the cantonal governments of Una-Sana, Tuzla, and Posavina, and the Government of Brcko District on developing gas interconnections.

The Western Interconnection BiH – Croatia project aligns with Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Framework Energy Strategy and aims to strengthen cross-border energy infrastructure. The first phase will see the construction of a gas pipeline running from Rakovica through Trzac to Bosanska Krupa, with branches extending to Bihac and Velika Kladusa. This segment is already listed as a Project of Mutual Interest within the Energy Community. Future phases will expand the pipeline further, connecting Kljuc, Bosanski Petrovac, and Buzim to the growing network.

The initiative is expected to bolster energy security, improve supply efficiency, and facilitate Bosnia and Herzegovina’s transition to more sustainable energy solutions.
