Sensex Nifty Today | Stock Market Highlights: Indian headline indices ended Friday session in the red, weighed down by a sudden and sharp sell-off. The Sensex slipped over 1,000 points intraday, while the Nifty fell below the 24,000 mark. The market mood turned cautious as escalating diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan, coupled with reports of ceasefire violations along the Line of Control (LoC) following the Pahalgam terror attack, spooked investors on Dalal Street. At close, the Sensex ended the day below 79,200, while the Nifty settled near the 24,000 mark.

Three reasons why the markets are falling today

Markets apprehensive on Pak Military firing: The entire nation is in a state of mourning given the brutal killings by the terrorists in Pahalgam. India has taken a string stance with key steps like suspending the Indus water treaty. Pakistan has retaliated in response and there as been firing along the Line of Control. The Indian Army ‘effectively responded’ to the firing. Investors are as a result apprehensive about taking long position ahead of the weekend in this situation.

Spike in Volatility Index: The volatility Index is up 6%. This is a gauge of investor fear in the market. The Index has surged nearly 8% in the last 5 sessions. Both in terms of geo-political cues and the development across border in Pakistan has been worrying investors significantly.

Sharp cuts in the small and midcap space: The BSE Small cap Index is down 2.6% while the BSE Midcap slips 2.3%. These stocks have been battered significantly in the past few months and many market observer believe that there is scope for more correction, given stretched valuation.
