PULLMAN — Sequim’s Riley Pyeatt won her first individual outdoor race at the end of April as a member of the Washington State women’s track and field team.

Pyeatt, a state champion and Nike national champion while running for Sequim High School, took first in the 1,500-meter run at the WSU Cougar Classic on April 26. Her time of 4 minutes, 35.21 seconds edged teammate Maya Nichols by 2.3 seconds.

It wasn’t Pyeatt’s best time of the year, but it was her first victory. Her top time, 4:28.62, was set at the Bryan Clay Invitational on April 18, good for 26th.

Pyeatt also has a seventh-place finish in the 800 meters, accomplished April 5 at the Stanford Invitational and an eighth-place finish in the 1,500, which she did March 21 at the Aztec Invitational at San Diego State University.

Pyeatt joined the WSU team last fall after running for two years at Abilene Christian, where she won three 800 and 1,500 races in 2024 and was third overall in the Western Athletic Conference in the 800. Running for WSU, She also won an indoor one-mile race in 5:07.08 at the Spokane Invitational on Dec. 14, 2024 and ran the 800-meter leg as part of a WSU DMR 4,000-meter relay team that took first on Feb. 22 at the MPSF Indoor Track and Field Championships.

While at Sequim High School, Pyeatt won the 800-meter state championship in 2022, and was the anchor on the Sequim High School 4×400 girls relay team that won the state championship. The same four girls — Hi’ilei Robinson, Kaitlyn Bloomenrader, Eve Mavy and Pyeatt — also won the 4×400 relay at the Nike national championships in Eugene, Ore., later that summer.

Bridge closure

Two Port Angeles prep games were postponed Monday due to a closure of the Hood Canal Bridge in the afternoon for mechanical problems.

A Roughriders softball game at North Kitsap was postponed as well as a soccer match against Olympic that was scheduled to be played at the Monroe Playfields.

No other games in the Olympic League were listed as postponed.

There is no information yet on when the events will be rescheduled.

Girls tennis

Port Angeles 6, Kingston 1

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls tennis team swept the singles matches and took three out of four doubles matches in a 6-1 win over Kingston this weekend.

The Olympic League tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at North Kitsap High School in Poulsbo.
