Rohit had been going through a rough patch for the past couple of years in the red-ball format, both with the bat and as a captain. Under him, India lost a Test series at home after 12 long years as New Zealand clinched the series 3-0.
It was followed by a thrashing at the hands of Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024/25, which ultimately saw India fail to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final to be held in June 2025.
Rohit, who's widely regarded as one of the best batters of the modern era, has struggled overseas at times, which has raised questions among fans and experts alike.
Out of his 67 Test matches played, 31 have come overseas, where Rohit has managed to score only 1644 runs at an average of 31.01, with a highest score of 127 against England.

Dave Cullinan feels India won't miss Sharma in Tests
Former South African cricketer Cullinan feels that India is better off without the veteran's services in the Test format. He believes that the former Indian skipper's retirement was long overdue, adding that it wouldn't have much of an impact on the upcoming Test series against England.

"Rohit's retirement was probably long overdue in terms of test cricket away from India. Let's be honest about it. He hasn't really been the player that he throughout his career has been at home and we saw reluctance from him in recent Australian series to really take it on and lead from the front. So I don't see that as being a loss for India at all," he said.
What did Dave Cullinan say about Rohit Sharma's record in Tests?
Cullinan had previously called out Rohit for being a flat-track bully due to his abysmal record in Tests in the red-ball format.
Rohit, whose records showcase that he has performed better in the subcontinent than overseas, was cherry-picked by the Proteas veteran after he failed in last year's BGT.

Speaking to InsideSport, Cullinan said, "I think Rohit is a flat-track bully. Let's look at his record outside of India. Every time he's been to South Africa, you clearly get the feeling that he doesn't like the short ball."
Cullinan felt that after Bumrah led India to a fantastic win in the first Test, which Rohit had missed due to personal issues.
