Last week, the United States Mint released the William McKinley Presidential Silver Medal and the Innovation dollar for Florida. Fresh sales data now sheds light on how both performed in their opening days.
Launched on May 15, the Florida Innovation dollar showcases the NASA Space Shuttle lifting off from Kennedy Space Center. It marks the third release of 2025 and the 27th overall in the Mint’s American Innovation® $1 Coin Program.
Offered in 25-coin rolls and 100-coin bags, the Florida dollar opened with combined sales of 940,875 coins – one of the strongest starts in the series’ recent history.
Compared to other recent issues:
- The 2025 Michigan dollar, honoring Ransom Olds and his groundbreaking assembly line concept, opened with 887,225 coins (now at 881,625 following adjustments).
- The 2025 Arkansas dollar, featuring Raye Montague, a pioneering engineer and Arkansas native who helped design the U.S. Navy’s Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate, opened with 766,225 coins (now at 814,800).
- The 2024 Missouri dollar, showing George Washington Carver working in his laboratory, began with 720,850 coins (now at 919,425).
- The 2024 Maine dollar, highlighting Dr. Bernard Lown and his development of the direct current defibrillator, debuted with 908,150 coins (now at 902,000 following adjustments).
- The 2024 Alabama dollar, depicting a Saturn V rocket, opened with 980,800 coins (now at 1,005,825), the strongest start for the series since its 2018 launch.
- The 2024 Illinois dollar, illustrating the invention of the steel plow, began with 801,250 coins (now at 910,975).
Released on May 12 and priced at $90, the 1-ounce .999 fine silver medal honoring 25th U.S. President William McKinley opened with sales of 10,207. It ranks among the slower starts in the series and it could dip further, as medals in the program often undergo early downward adjustments before trending upward again.

Not a huge fan of colorized coins, but that Navy seal as a reverse in color would be KILLER!
Agreed.
DaveSWFL and Reb, another cool option would be to have executed the coins, with the finish comparable to both the 2016 Mark Twain Commemorative Proof Silver $1 and Gold $5 coins. Some might or perhaps as you may recall, those coins had varying different laser frost finishes, making the design elements appear to stand out more. Description, excerpt, link, picture below, from Coin News article by Darrin Lee Unser, titled: “2016 Mark Twain Silver Dollars Launch”(2/1/16). “Different frosting techniques appear on the proof Mark Twain Silver Dollar. Imagery released by the U.S. Mint lists the four treatments as proof polish… Read more »
Cali,
I don’t know how they do it, but some of these colorized coins look great. They are done with such precision that I am sure they are not being done by hand anymore. The technology has matured. I’ve been buying them up cheap on eBay to add to my albums as accent pieces.
Cheers
When they say “LASER,” I am assuming Laser Printed with some kind of enamel toner. Also, heat or a high intensity light source would be needed to cure the toner. Actually, you can see the dots in the finish.
Ok Cali, I get it. My bad. Your above pic demonstrates a “Color Code” for the varying intensities of frost. Sorry for the confusion. But DaveSWFL may be right in suggesting actual “Colors.” I’m waiting for the mint to pull this rabbit out of their hat soon, as some of the other world mints have already done so. Also, seems like almost every country in the world has gone to “Polymer Bank Notes” and we haven’t.
Cheers

(Entire article from Today’s WSJ) Treasury Sounds Death Knell for Penny Production One-cent coins are expected to stop entering circulation early next year. Businesses will need to round prices up or down. The U.S. government is phasing out the penny, whose use has spanned more than two centuries. The Treasury Department will stop putting new pennies into circulation by early next year. Afterward, there won’t be enough pennies to use in everyday cash transactions, and businesses will need to start rounding up or down to the nearest 5 cents, the Treasury said in a statement. The move is the culmination… Read more »
FINALLY!! I began to think the day would never come. The savings will be so much greater than the cost of production. Another wasteful program bites the dust. R.I.P. one cent coin.
Agree, it’s so good to see that things are finally getting done when it comes to 86-ing wasteful Gov programs. Very refreshing!
As far as the 1C regular strike, 2024 will soon be a low-ish key when it comes to the Lincoln as we know it? In 2026 the 1C planchets may be scarce, and a tweaked/new 250th 1C design with a low mintage might stir up some excitement? Just a guess.
If they run out of penny planchets for the 2026 1c, could they just strike a bunch on dime planchets for the numismatic community demands. The US Mint always takes a loss on those items anyway.

When the Lincoln Shield Cent goes away, people will subliminally miss them, and collector demand should surge. I’ve been picking up most of the ones listed above in duplicate. This one just came in today. 2019-W NGC MS-69RD PL. FDI+PL+Lyndal Bass Signed is best for the 2019W UNC. The MS-70s are $3,400. I won this coin through an eBay Auction with the Coin Advisor. Good evening, Kennedy Half Dollar fans! More, “Fun With Numbers” at the U.S. Mint! The 2024 is your lowest mintage(1964-present) Kennedy standard silver proof coin. This is your low mintage warning! Haha… The 2023 Kennedy Silver Proof coins are currently at 227,104. The 2024 is currently at 194,257. The 2024 Silver Proof set is unavailable(LKS 170,398, 5/18/25). The 2023 Silver Proof Set(available) sits at 197,371. So if you want a 2024 Kennedy Silver Proof coin, and don’t have one, your last resort, besides the 5:30 a.m. EST “Fire Sales”, is going to be the 2024 LESPS or the secondary market.… Read more »

E1, “This is my short list for the Lincoln Shield Cents…… ***** Union Shield Cents: Low Mintage Keys *****” Thanks for posting your 1C Shield list E. The first thing that I did was save it next to the other page that you gave us — the “E1 Top 25 Kennedy Money Coins”(actually more coins – but condensed). I have been casually watching the three 2019 “W”s, and more specifically the W-Unc Business coins for the last year, and haven’t pulled the trigger on one yet. I’ve been watching the PCGS MS70RD examples when they come to auction, which isn’t… Read more »
Rick, Yes, I think it is time to start grabbing up some of these low mintage Union Shield Cents before the prices take off. Regarding the 2019-W UNC coin, I recommend the MS-69 RD PL and not the MS-70. Like you mentioned, the prices are dropping on the over priced 70s. You might want to wait for the 70 as the pops increase with time. I have my eye on the 2025-S Proof Shield Cent in PR-70. I think the mintage will come in low for the year. As did the 2024-S Proof Shield Cent unofficially. Believe it or not,… Read more »
Also, I’ve cobbled together a few more Shield Cents over the last couple of months. I’ve been winning these at auction for about $50 each, except for the recent 2019W UNC shown above. There were a lot of good deals out there and they are starting to dwindle.
Well, have a great holiday weekend Rick. Don’t forget the Indy 500 on Sunday May 25th at 12:45PM Eastern Time. And the Monaco Grand Prix at 9:00 AM Eastern Time before the Indy.

Anyway E1, thanks again for the 1C Shield list, and thanks for the heads-up for the Coin Advisor sales. You not only talk the talk, you walk the walk when it comes to the collecting, restoration, and the preservation of great coins ✓ Correct about the coming collector desirability, demand, and surge for the 1C scarcities. E1,
Yes, great advice on the 2019-W-PL’s, really nice.
I’ve cobbled together a few more “duplicates” myself from the money seats ⇊, however, the cheap seats are just as fruitful, and I’m on it!

Huge props to Cag for his firs pounding the table regarding gold being CHEAP over the last 2 years. The weekly price chart still has gold in a SOLID Uptrend – it’s just beautiful! The daily chart shows strong support at the 50 day moving average. Right now is crucial for short term perspective – in a downtrend channel with 2 legs down. Will we get a 3rd leg down or will the price of gold take off to new highs yet again? The longer view of the daily chart is still in an uptrend with the last low just… Read more »
