Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United, Real Madrid transfer news: Contract delay causes breakdown

News Corp Australia

IT’S happening again.

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is again agitating for a return to Manchester United amid reports in Spain he has suffered a “total divorce” with club president Florentino Perez.

In a sensational repeat of the summer transfer window, the Portuguese superstar is contemplating a dream return to his former club, with talks he is fed up with “broken promises” over a new Real contract.

Leo Messi’s new Barcelona deal took him over his great rival in the earning stakes, with El Mundo Deportivo reporting Ronaldo is “running out of patience” to sign a new deal with increased salary to put him back above Messi.

Neymar’s move to Paris Saint-Germain means Ronaldo is now the third highest earner in world football.

“They always tell me tomorrow, tomorrow,” Mundo quote a source saying of Ronaldo’s frustration, with the anger “not a matter of money, but of status.”

Incredible, Ronaldo, who currently earns €40m net per season, believes he must be the best paid player in the world to match his beliefs he is the best player in the world.

Madrid-based Marca claim the rift between Ronaldo and Perez began in the summer and the club are adamant now is not the time to tie him down to a new deal, considering his dismal return in front of goal.

Marca writes: “The club wants to keep him, but with several approaches from clubs in recent days it will be seen whether his challenge is real or not [or if] he is ready to walk away.”

Marca – a pro-Real publication – even ran an article tossing up the pros and cons of keeping Ronaldo, whose current deal keeps him in the Spanish capital until he’s 36.

Sport add that Ronaldo is “furious” and “cannot bear it anymore”, wanting to leave Real if his demands are not met.

“Ronaldo is more indignant, more furious and more annoyed than ever,” said journalist Edu Aguirre on TV program El Chiringuito.

“They have not sat down to negotiate, there has been no negotiation, there has just been a little contact. Ronaldo does not like how the club are acting and thinks the president does not want him.”

Sky Sports’ Spanish football expert Guillem Balague claims the breakdown stems around Ronaldo’s demands for a £44m a year salary, a whopping demand for a 33-year-old.

“Ronaldo’s message is he wants to leave, and it appears Real Madrid will be willing to let him go. However, Real would love to see a fight between PSG and Man Utd, but the situation is more complicated than simply being interested in the player,” Balague said.

“To add to a net annual salary demand of around £44m, Real would also demand around £89m for Ronaldo, which is an almighty expense for a player who would arrive aged 33.

“Here’s United’s conundrum: the club cannot show a lack of interest if it is confirmed that Ronaldo is on the market. But the huge amount of money his transfer would demand cannot be justified.”

In Spain, the publication that broke the news – AS – reports that Ronaldo’s priority is “focused on returning to United”.

They claimed: “Despite being the top scorer in the history of the club, Cristiano has never had a feeling with Florentino and has always encountered difficulties when negotiating his [contract extensions], and is aware that he has the handicap of being a signing closed by [former president] Ramón Calderón.”

It comes as the Daily Mail report Perez has given the green light for Ronaldo to depart, while Portuguese paper Record say agent Jorge Mendes will listen to offers for his player.

Ronaldo has scored just four La Liga goals, from over 90 shots this season as Real flounder in fourth place in La Liga.
