Artur Szpilka reveals crazy experience with Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis before Deontay Wilder fight
Photo by Focus on Sport/Getty Images

Artur Szpilka has reminisced over his interaction with Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis in the moments before his fight with Deontay Wilder.

On January 16, 2016, ‘The Pin’ challenged ‘The Bronze Bomber’ for the WBC heavyweight world title at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

In a remarkable display, the underdog boxed beautifully, making his opponent miss before coming back with his own heavy blows.

Alas, in the end, Wilder knocked Szpilka out cold with a right hand. But regardless of the result, the former soccer hooligan still took a lot of positives away from that night.

Artur Szpilka recalls heartwarming Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis story

Artur Szpilka, defines what it means to be a warrior. Whether it be on the streets, in the ring, or even inside the cage, the scrapper is willing to put it all on the line in pursuit of victory.

His ferocious fighting spirit has resonated with the people of Poland, with an army of fans turning up to his showdown with Deontay Wilder.

The presence of his supporters filled Szpilka with joy, and spending the moments before the contest with three of the greatest heavyweights of all time, made things even sweeter.

In an exclusive interview with Bloody Knockout, he explained: “Each fight for the world championship is a cherry on top. It’s a dream come true. Before that fight, I was one of the happiest people on Earth.

“I was standing in the ring next to Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis. They were all there with me when they were playing my anthem.

“All the Polish immigrants were singing, and I could feel shivers down my spine. Michael Buffer was in charge of announcing. It doesn’t matter if I won the title or not; I still competed for it. Nobody can take away those memories from me.”

Artur Szpilka returns to action at KSW 105

On Saturday evening at KSW 105, inside the PreZero Arena in Gliwice, Poland, Artur Szpilka will fight inside the cage against Errol Zimmerman.

And having lost in his last outing, the fan favorite knows he needs to produce a big performance.

The 36-year-old explained: “Everything depends on the first round, it’s going to make it clear what can happen. My intention is to demonstrate my boxing skills, so to go back to my origin instead of wilding out with Superman punches or flying knees. They didn’t work last time, so that’s enough.

“I have to focus on what I do best, meaning my footwork, throwing combinations… who knows, maybe I’ll even go for a takedown.

“Me and Errol met when we were filming our trailer. I was shocked to see how much weight he lost, but when you’re preparing for Artur Szpilka, you want to be in the best shape of your life.

“I don’t feel like a superstar, but more like a man who owes everything in his life to hard work. I’m feeling like a guy who’s inciting emotions, someone you can’t simply ignore.”

Vancouver Canucks Superstar's Free Agency Price Tag Officially Revealed

Brock Boeser is set to hit free agency for the first time in his career, and according to a top insider, he's the second most valuable free agent on the market. There aren't many stars available on the free agency market this upcoming off-season in the NHL, but those that are available are going to get paid in a big way as teams look to add to their roster to chase the Stanley Cup once more in 2026. While Mitch Marner, Nikolaj Ehlers, Sam Bennett and Brad Marchand are likely the biggest names on the market, there's some very talented players hitting free agency, with former Canucks star Brock Boeser ready to get paid in a big way. According to Insider Frank Seravalli, Boeser is in line to get the second biggest contract (per annual value) this off-season only behind Mitch Marner, with projections seeing him land a deal worth $8.5 million AAV over six years. At 28-years of age, he's younger than Marner, Bennett, Marchand, Duchene, Tavares and all the other big names available, and with 65 goals over the last two seasons, if he can find his way onto a consistently good line in free agency, he may be in line for some career years moving forward. On top of that, the salary cap is still set to go up in the coming years, meaning that if a team can land Boeser at $8.5 million a season, it will look like a bargain in the coming years when teams have more and more money to spend. Ultimately, there can be arguments made that Boeser isn't the second best player available in free agency, but given his performance in recent years, the age gap between he and the other free agents available and the amount of teams looking to pay big for wingers, expect him to land a massive contract in the summer.

Lakers Reportedly Already 'Talked to' Bucks Star

The Los Angeles Lakers continue to try to find a way to improve the roster. Losing in the first round of the playoffs was not the kind of finish they had in mind for this season. After the trade for Mark Williams failed at the trade deadline, it was clear that the center position was going to be the biggest hole on the roster in the playoffs. That ended up being the case. The top priority for the Lakers this offseason is to get a center who can help them protect the rim. That's why they have already reached out to a Bucks star player. Los Angeles has reportedly already reached out to center Brook Lopez about a possible reunion. Lopez played for the Lakers for one season back in 2017-18. Lopez is 37 years old and will be ending his career soon. The Bucks have kept him because of how good of a defensive player he is. He also stretches the floor well. That is the exact kind of center the Lakers are looking to add, although Lopez is a bit older than someone they would like to bring in because of how young Luka Doncic is. Despite his advanced age, Lopez has shown the ability to still play very well. The Lakers might still be okay with that as they try to chase a title with LeBron James nearing the end of his career, as well. More Lakers news: Lakers Fans Vehemently Push Against Russell Westbrook Reunion Los Angeles is going to check around the league to add a center who is better than Jaxson Hayes. Unfortunately for them, the options are limited at that spot. The Lakers don't have enough cap space to make a push for anyone in free agency. They would have to do a sign-and-trade in order to get one of those centers. Los Angeles does have some assets to trade in order to land the kind of center that they want to pair with Doncic for years to come. Lopez would just be a stop-gap. This past season, Lopez averaged 13 points, five rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. Braves Release Former Rival's All-Star & Local Pitcher

2022 All-Star first baseman Garrett Cooper won't receive a chance to play for the Atlanta Braves after all. Neither will a veteran pitcher who was born in Columbus, Ga. The Gwinnett Stripers announced through the MiLB transaction page that the organization released Cooper on Sunday. The Stripers also announced the release of relief pitcher Jordan Weems on Monday. Cooper made the 2022 National League All-Star team with the Miami Marlins. During that season, he hit .261 with a .752 OPS. The first baseman had an .853 OPS in the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign and an .845 OPS in 2021 as well. The Marlins traded Cooper to the San Diego Padres at the MLB trade deadline in 2023. Since then, Cooper has bounced around the league, also playing for the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox. Cooper signed with the Braves on Jan. 12 this year. He didn't make the team during Spring Training. At Triple-A Gwinnett this season, Cooper slashed .228/.312/.309 with six extra-base hits in 138 plate appearances. It's never a good sign when a hitter's on-base percentage is higher than his slugging percentage. Cooper slashed .206/.267/.299 in 116 plate appearances with the Cubs and Red Sox last season. A day after Cooper's release, the Stripers moved on from a veteran in their bullpen by cutting Weems. The Braves signed the right-hander in December, and like Cooper, Weems didn't make the MLB roster during Spring Training. At Triple-A, Weems was 1-1 with a 5.09 ERA, 1.642 WHIP and 18 strikeouts in 17.2 innings in 14 appearances. The 32-year-old pitcher attended Columbus High School, which is about 115 miles south of Truist Park. Columbus High School also produced Hall of Fame first baseball Frank Thomas. But unless the Braves elect to bring back Weems, he won't pitch for his hometown team in the MLB. Weems last appeared at the big league level for the Washington Nationals last year. He posted a 6.70 ERA and 1.752 WHIP in 41 appearances. The right-hander has also pitched for the then Oakland Athletics and Arizona Diamondbacks. He is 6-4 with a 5.26 ERA in 140 career MLB games.

Michael Malone's insincerity on full display in ESPN debut

Is Michael Malone still salty about being fired by the Nuggets? Denver's former head coach raised some eyebrows with comments he made Tuesday night during his debut as an ESPN analyst. First, he called Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander "the MVP" of the NBA, backtracking on earlier comments about Nikola Jokic. On March 11, when the Nuggets still employed him, Malone went on a profanity-laced tirade, saying analysts alike were "bulls—ing" by picking SGA over Jokic in the two-man MVP race. He argued that Jokic, the first player in NBA history to finish in the top three in four statistical categories, would have won the MVP "10 out of 10 times" if not for the media bias. Vic Lombardi, the longtime voice of the Nuggets, hinted that Malone was still not over his breakup with the organization. Malone wasn't done taking shots at his ex. The 2023 NBA champion said that the Thunder won Game 7 against the Nuggets in front of "the best fans in the NBA." Many perceived the comment as another swipe at the Nuggets. Malone called the Mile High City faithful the "best fans in the NBA" several times in previous years. Malone's shots at Jokic and the Nuggets lend further credence to the notion that the locker room was on board with his dismissal. In the immediate aftermath of his firing, Jokic surprisingly said that Nuggets governor Josh Kroenke's decision to clean house may benefit him and his team in the season's final stretch. Jokic also admitted that he was on board with Malone's firing and "accepted" the decision. Ultimately, Malone's firing worked wonders for the Nuggets, who fared well under interim coach David Adelman. After finishing the regular season 3-0 under Adelman, the Nuggets pushed the top-seeded Thunder to a Game 7 in the second round of the postseason. Back in March, the Nuggets seemed destined for an early playoff exit.
