When I was a kid, I wanted to be … a fashion designer and Egyptologist. I’ve always loved art and being creative, so I thought being a fashion designer would be my dream job. However, I also was obsessed with Egyptian history and enamored with the Indiana Jones movies in the ‘80s/’90s. So my plan was to work in Egypt for half the year and then relocate to New York to prep for Fashion Week.
What would you rather be doing right now? I would rather be either painting/doodling or traveling the world.
Shhhhhh! Don't tell anyone that … I actually like the smell of skunk.
Other than your wedding day and/or the birth of your children, what was your proudest moment? I recently completed 30 hand-painted watercolor illustrations for Chaddock’s new book, titled “Chad the Cougar and the Forest of Feelings,” which will be released to the public later this year.
It really stinks when … people chew ice or hard candy around me.
What word in the dictionary would your face be next to? Bubbly.
I always laugh when … my dog lets out an exasperated sigh when she literally has done nothing in the day but lay around.
Invite any three people, living or dead, to dinner. Who are they? I have so many questions for Jesus, so He would definitely be on the top of my list. I’d love to sit down with Corrie ten Boom, a Dutch woman who hid Jews in her home during World War II and was a concentration camp survivor. And to round out my table, I also would invite Cleopatra because I want to hear what it was like to live in Egypt at that time and what it would have been like to be pharaoh.
At the end of a really long day at work, I like to … whip up some homemade wienerschnitzel for my family and read Harry Potter with my daughter all snuggled up in my bed.
People who knew me in high school thought I was … goody two-shoes.
My most unforgettable brush with greatness was … I had the opportunity to meet Miss America Mallory Hagan at a Miss Missouri event. After I was done singing, she pulled the size tag off of my new dress while I was still on stage. So embarrassing!
I would drop all my plans tonight if I had the chance to … fly to Vienna, Austria.
If someone gave me a million dollars, there is STILL no way I would … hold a spider.
America should be more concerned about … better maternity/paternity leave options. I had to go back to work at five weeks postpartum and pay an outrageous price for daycare. I wish we could overhaul our current policies to help support parents.
I'm OK if there's ever a national shortage of … art supplies. I have a room in my house that is essentially a mini Hobby Lobby.
When I'm on the Internet, I always go to … NPR is my go-to for current events.
What is the most useful piece of advice you have ever received? My therapist recently changed my life by encouraging me to notice where I focus my energy. I am working on focusing on the things I can control rather than worrying about the things out of my control. My main phrase is “that’s not mine.”
When I'm cruising down the road, I'm likely listening to … my daughter and I are obsessed with the “Wicked” soundtrack at the moment.
I always get sentimental when … I see baby photos of my sweet baby Hazel.
The older I get, the more I realize … people aren’t thinking about you as much as you think they are.
If I had one "do-over," I would … have stayed in Vienna, Austria. I loved living in that gorgeous city and hope to move back one day.
My favorite item of clothing is … My current favorite item of clothing is a bold fuchsia sweater I bought from Trudy’s Trendy Boutique last fall. There’s something about that sweater that makes me feel like the most confident and beautiful woman in the world (and it helps that I got it on sale).
If I've learned anything at all … I have learned that I can’t do anything without praying about it first. I need God to lead and guide me in everything I do. Do I always get it right? Absolutely not, but every day I am leaning on Jesus, and learning what He would have me do with every conversation and interaction I have.
Sarah Goodapple, 43, and her husband Erik have an 8-year-old daughter Hazel. Goodapple grew up in the area but moved to Vienna, Austria, for two years and then Springfield, Mo., for about 12 years working for the Assemblies of God World Missions. The family moved back to Quincy in 2021, and Goodapple knew she would want to work with children and families, so Chaddock was her top choice. Goodapple is a full-time family coach at Chaddock, co-directs the Chaddock Puppet Team and recently illustrated a social-emotional children’s book for Chaddock.
