Fox Corp to launch streaming platform Fox One, targets ‘cord-nevers’Reuters
Fox Corp is all set to launch its own direct-to-consumer streaming service, Fox One, ahead of the National Football League (NFL) season this fall.

The announcement was made during the company’s quarterly earnings call on Monday, May 12, Variety reported.

The streaming service Fox One is designed specifically for ‘cord-nevers’ – the audience that has never subscribed to cable or satellite TV services.

As per reports, Fox One will provide both live and on-demand access to a broad range of Fox channels which include Fox, Fox News, Fox Business, and Fox Weather. The package will also have all Fox Sports channels, Fox Deportes, BTN, and local Fox stations. Additionally, the viewers could include Fox Nation as part of the bundle.

Fox One: Pricing strategy aimed at cable retention

A CNBC report stated that the pricing structure for Fox One has not been finalised yet. CEO Lachlan Murdoch, however, told media it would reflect the cost of pay-TV wholesale rates and would not undercut cable bundles.

Murdoch claimed it would be a failure if they lost cable viewers and attracted more connected subscribers. He affirmed that Fox wants to expand their audience and not sever existing cable consumers.

The cable subscribers will have access to Fox One without additional costs, the report added.

Fox Corporation has also revealed plans that Fox One, which is being launched to attract audiences who prefer to stream, will be bundled with other streaming services and distributors. Murdoch noted that several platforms had reached out to Fox for bundling partnerships and a number of those will be confirmed soon.

Pete Distad to lead Fox One

Fox Corp’s new streaming division will be headed by Pete Distad, a former executive at Apple and Hulu. Recently, Distad led ‘failed’ Venu Sports, a joint venture between Disney and Warner Bros Discovery. The project was shelved after legal challenges, and each company then went their separate ways.

Speaking of Fox One, Distad said that the platform has been built from ground up and it will have advanced personalised technology to enhance viewer engagement.

    Earnings boosted by Super Bowl

The announcement came as Fox reported strong quarterly results as their total revenue hit $4.37 billion, up 27 per cent year-on-year. Much of the gain was attributed to Super Bowl LIX which drove advertising revenue past $2 billion.

Some commercials cost as much as $8 million, and the game was watched by an estimated 128 million viewers.

Fox reportedly still runs its ad-supported free service Tubi, which also streamed the Super Bowl. But Fox One will be its first broad-based subscription streaming service.
