1 teen dead, 1 injured after shooting at DeKalb gas station, residents react

One teenager is dead and an 18-year-old has been rushed to the hospital after a shooting at a DeKalb County gas station early Tuesday morning.

Investigators say the deadly shooting started as an argument and are searching for a third person connected with the violence.

What we know:

Officials tell FOX 5 that they responded to a call about a person shot at the gas station on the 6000 block of Hillandale Drive at around 2:15 a.m. on Tuesday.

At the scene, they found a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old with gunshot wounds. Medics rushed both victims to a local hospital. Unfortunately, the teen was not able to survive his injuries.

Surveillance video provided by a store employee appeared to show three people shooting at each other inside the store.

What they're saying:

"I just thought that it was really crazy about the gun violence that's going on now," said Quajanay White, a customer at the gas station Tuesday.

"I feel like if they up the patrol that there will be less shootings and things of that nature," said Ray Nelson, another gas station customer.

"I try to stay away from gas stations late at night," White said. "It's sad that the fact I'm even numb to it."

The backstory:

This is not the first violent incident at the location. In 2020, another shooting at the same Shell station left two people injured.

"We got a lot of young guys that don't go to school, so they use the stores as a hangout spot," Nelson said. "I feel like if the store people could keep the area in the front without people just hanging out, then it'll be better to be safer."
