Red River's Koerner and Roughriders both finish second at state

MINOT — For the second year in a row, the home team has won the North Dakota Class A boys golf championship.

A year ago, Grand Forks Red River took home the team title at King's Walk.

On Wednesday, Minot North held off the Roughriders' hopes of a repeat state title at Vardon Golf Club.

Minot North finished with 606 strokes — seven shots ahead of Red River and Fargo Shanley.

In the individual race, Grand Forks finished with two in the top three but Bismarck Century's Parker Beck, a sophomore, dominated the field with back-to-back 67s to end with 134.

Red River's Kolby Koerner was nine shots back in second at 143 with rounds of 70 and 73.

Grand Forks Central's Cole Wilber finished at 146 in third place with rounds of 72 and 74. The Knights finished eighth as a team.

Minot North was led by a third-place finish from Kasen Rostad and a fifth-place finish from Walter Langhans.

In addition to Koerner's second-place finish, other Red River scorers were Silas Dusenbury (11th), Stetsen Brown (17th) and Jordan Peters (47th). Peters entered the meet as the Riders' sixth seed but turned in rounds of 81 and 81.

The Riders return their top three scorers from the state meet and four of the six next season. Koerner and Dusenbury are juniors, while Brown and No. 5 seed Kyler Bydal are sophomores.

Fargo Davies entered Day 2 with the team lead with a 302 on Day 1, two shots ahead of Minot North and five ahead of Red River.

The Eagles, though, shot a round of 313 on Day 2 to finish in fourth place.
