Beach Cities Sports: Beach volleyball, running, triathlon and more

The SCVC Quiksilver 16 and 17 teams from Redondo Beach won gold medals at the inaugural AAU Boys West Coast Championships held in Anaheim last weekend. Beach Volleyball: The 20th Annual BarryBob Invitational tournament will take place Saturday, June 30 at 9 a.m. at 904 The Strand in Manhattan Beach. Triathlon: Registration is open for the Hermosa Beach Triathlon to be held Sunday, June 24 at the Hermosa Beach Pier. The 1/4-mile swim, 10-mile bike and 3-mile run begins at 7 a.m. Entry fees are $115 for individual, $170 for relay. For more information, visit dayatthebeachtri.com.

 

Paddleboarding: The Rock 2 Rock race (solo and relay, prone and stand-up paddlers) will be held Sunday, June 24 finishing at Cabrillo State Beach. Rock 2 Rock is a qualifying race for the Catalina Classic, which takes place Sunday, Aug. 23, ending at the Manhattan Beach Pier. Only solo, prone paddlers are allowed in the Classic. Running: Fresh off her 10,000 meter record in April, Kirsten Leetch joined forces with her teammates at Janes Elite Racing to shatter the American Record of 10:44 for the 50-54 age group 4×800 with a time of 10:26. They broke the record by 18 seconds at West LA College.

 

Winners of the Manhattan Beach 5K held Saturday were: Males James Khan, 19, 18:04 Thomas Velvin, 16, 18:54 and Rick McCray, 43, 19:17 along with females Maria Buchbinder, 31, 23:14, Jennifer Marschner, 41, 26:19 and Rosa Serna, 24, 26:21.

 

Registration is ongoing for the 25th Annual Village Runner 4th of July 5K and Firecracker Dash for kids. The 5K race begins at 8 a.m. and features T-shirts, chip timing, age division awards and cash prizes to the top three overall male and female runners. The  Manhattan Beach Grand Prix will have a new look this year, adding a 1-mile running race with a prize purse of $4,00. South Bay runner Stewart Harwell partnered with the MB Grand Prix Committee, Village Runner’s Mike Ward and Chevron to add two races of 300 runners each – a women’s race at 12:30 p.m. followed by the men 15 minutes later. Participants receive commemorative run tees, chip timing and there will be medals for the top three finishers in each age division. Race entry is $30 before July 10 (add $10 after). Basketball: Dave Miller, Emmy Award winning NBA analyst, will be hosting his 21st annual  MVPCamp.com summer basketball camps at Aviation Sports Complex in Redondo Beach. Session I will be held July 9-13 (coed), Session II July 16-20 (girls only) and Session III July 30-Aug. 3 (coed). Camps will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and open to boys and girls ages 5 to 14. Baseball: The Prospects Travel Baseball team will holding tryouts for its 9-14 Under teams July 8 at 4 p.m. at the Beach City Baseball Academy, 430 E. Grand, El Segundo. Beachcitybaseballacademy.com.

 

Beach City Baseball & Softball Academy will offer four weeks of camps during July and August. Open to boys and girls ages 5-12, the baseball and softball camps will focus on drills that will improve fundamentals of: hitting, outfield, infield, base running, sliding, and more. The West Torrance Camp (5417 Halison St., Torrance) runs from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. July 9 – 13 and July 30 – Aug. 3. The El Segundo Camp (430 E. Volleyball: The United States Youth Volleyball League (USYVL) is holding registration for the 2018 fall program in Hermosa Beach. The instructional volleyball league will provide boys and girls ages 7-15 the opportunity to learn and play volleyball in a fun, safe, and supervised environment. The eight-week developmental league provides instruction while practices and games operate in a coed format and offer participants the opportunity to develop self-esteem and confidence. The league runs  Sept. 10 through Oct. 29 at South Park. Practices for the league will be held on Mondays 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. and games on Wednesdays 5:30 – 6:30 p.m Registration is available online at usyvl.org and includes a volleyball, t-shirt, and end of season participation award.

 

Swimming: The inaugural Redondo Beach Open Water Swim will take place at 8 a.m. on Sunday, July 15 at Miramar Park, 201 Paseo De La Playa. 1-mile ($40) and 1/2-mile ($30) swims (add $10 after June 30). The event is a qualifying swim for the International Surf Festival Dwight Crum Pier-to-Pier swim. Finishers receive a T-shirt. Awards will be given to the top 5 overall and top 3 in each age group.
